The Big Two in Outboard Motors
Yamaha and Mercury dominate the outboard market — and for good reason. Both brands produce reliable, high-performance engines. But when it comes to sourcing replacement parts, there are real differences worth knowing before you buy.
Yamaha Outboard Parts
Yamaha has built a reputation for consistency. Many parts are shared across multiple model years, which means:
- Wider availability through aftermarket suppliers
- Lower cost on consumables like impellers, filters, and spark plugs
- Long model runs mean parts stay in production longer
Yamaha's F-series four-strokes are especially well-supported in the aftermarket space.
Mercury Outboard Parts
Mercury (made by Brunswick) is also well-supported, but their parts ecosystem is slightly more brand-dependent:
- More OEM-specific components that require Mercury or Quicksilver branded parts
- Premium parts quality, but often at a higher price point
- Verado and newer Pro XS models can have more limited aftermarket options
Our Take at Nick Marine
Both brands are excellent — and we stock parts for both. In our experience, Yamaha tends to be slightly more affordable on maintenance items like water pumps, thermostats, and fuel filters. Mercury wins on raw power options for performance builds.
Bottom line: Buy the engine that fits your boating style. When it needs parts, we've got you covered either way.
